FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 25, 1997
OTTAWA - Members of the Justice for Judi Solidarity Project will be gathering at the US Embassy (100 Wellington St.) on August 1st, from 11am to 1pm to raise awareness about Redwood Summer Justice Project's court case against the FBI. This will be followed by a candlelight vigil for Judi Bari at dusk of the same day, also at the embassy.
The lawsuit stems from the 1990 bombing of two Earth First! activists, Judi Bari (who passed away on March 2,1997) and Darryl Cherney. Within minutes of the blast, the FBI appeared on the scene and, in defiance of all the evidence, had Judi and Darryl arrested for possession of explosives, claiming it was their bomb and they were knowingly carrying it. Finally, after eight weeks of public accusations, the charges were dropped because there was no evidence. To this day the FBI and police have conducted no serious investigation of the bombing, and the bomber has remained at large.
The lawsuit claims that the FBI and police knew perfectly well that Judi and Darryl were innocent, and that they were in fact victims of a brutal assassination attempt. Their false arrests, the lawsuit charges, were part of an FBI-driven plan to dicredit Earth First! and to neutralize Judi and Darryl as organizers. So far this case has survived every attempt by the FBI to have it dismissed.
Such blatant violations as the Judi Bari bombing case must be challenged, not just for the sake of individual justice, but to ensure the safety and rights of all progressive activists.
